The minimum amount will depend on the cryptocurrency Exchange. For example Coinbase, a secure Exchange that is even listed on the Nasdaq, accepts purchases from 2 dollars. And it even gives you 5 dollars in Bitcoins when you register on its platform (promotion in force in the US).
