What to do if your iPhone only charges when off

Wanting to charge an iPhone when it’s on is a fairly common activity, especially to keep your battery at a better level. However, it may happen that this task is not carried out properly and rather check that the device only charges when it is turned off.

Why does an iPhone only charge when it’s off?

This error can have several causes, such as a damaged lightning cable or a defective cable, however, it is also possible that it is a software problem whose solution involves resorting to very simple procedures.

That is why below we propose a set of solutions recommended by Apple’s own support team. Follow the steps in the order listed until you find the solution.

Update your iPhone

Unlock your iPhone and go to Settings > General > Software Update. Tap Automatic update and turn on the Download iOS updates and Install iOS updates options.

After this, your device will be updated to the latest version of iOS. Check if the issue has been resolved. Otherwise, go to the next solution.

Do a force restart of the iPhone

Although this procedure is performed to wake up an iPhone that is frozen or unresponsive, it can be used to resolve this issue, however, the steps vary depending on the iPhone model.

On iPhone 8 and later (including iPhone SE 2nd generation), press the volume up button and quickly release it, then press the volume down button and quickly release it. Next, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo appear.

On iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears on the screen, release both buttons.

On iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE 1st generation, press and hold the Power button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears on the screen, release both buttons.

If the problem persists, go to the next solution.

Restore your iPhone with iTunes

Before performing this procedure, make sure you have updated your computer to the latest version of Windows, and also update iTunes to the latest version. Also, make a backup of the information contained in your iPhone. Then do the following.

Open iTunes on your PC, and then connect your iPhone using an original or Apple-certified lightning cable.

Once you are in the iTunes interface, click on the icon that represents your iPhone. Next, click Restore iPhone and follow the instructions.
