What does Windows 11 telemetry do?
Telemetry is a Windows 11 service through which Microsoft collects information about system operation, program usage data, personal data, and any other system events in order to diagnose problems and improve its products.
Despite the fact that it runs in the background, it consumes memory and processor resources that can mean a drop in the general performance of the computer.
Fortunately, it is possible to enable and disable the Windows 11 telemetry service, as well as some associated services, without affecting other system functions or normal front-of-screen tasks.
The steps to follow are those.
How to disable Windows 11 telemetry
Firstly, press the Windows + R keys to bring up the Run command. In the Open box, type services.msc and click OK.
Once the list of Windows services appears, locate the following services: Diagnostic Policy Service and Associated User Experiences and Telemetry.
Right-click on each of them and select the Stop option.
The next step is done from the Windows Registry. Click Start and in the Type here to search box, enter the expression regedit. When the Registry Editor app appears, select the Run as administrator option.
Once the Registry Editor is open, do the following. Go to the left side panel and go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > POLICIES > MICROSOFT > WINDOWS > DATACOLLECTION folder.
Now, place your cursor in the right (blank) window, right-click on it and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name it Allow Telemetry and double click on it to edit its parameters.
Under Value Data, assign the value zero, and under Base, select the Hexadecimal option. Click OK.
To finish, click Start and search for Notepad. Run this tool as an administrator and once it opens, go to File > Open menu and navigate to the following folder: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc.
In the dropdown menu above the Open and Cancel buttons, select All Files. Open the HOST file and under the 127.0.0.1 element paste the following addresses related to Microsoft servers.
