Until before the appearance of streaming devices such as Chromecast, Fire TV Stick or Mi Box S, the easiest way to see the content of a smartphone on the TV was to use MHL technology.
The use of this technology was very popular since it was incorporated in many cell phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S4, Huawei P6 S-L0, Alcatel ONE TOUCH 998, etc. Although it has the disadvantage of requiring the use of cables (and an adapter), it is very useful when you do not have access to a Wi-Fi network.
If you still have an MHL compatible phone, here we will show you how to connect it to the TV. The cables you will need are the telephone and an HDMI cable. As for the adapter, you can use the Samsung MHL / HDMI adapter or a generic one that is usually cheaper.
Note: before buying the adapter, verify that your smartphone is MHL compatible.
How to connect a cell phone to a TV using HDMI / MHL
Connect one end of the HDMI cable to a TV port. The other end of the cable connects to the MHL / HDMI adapter.
Connect the cell phone (for example, a Galaxy S4) to the MHL adapter.
Finally, connect one end of the phone’s USB cable to the adapter and the other end to a USB port on the TV or an external power outlet using the charger.
Once both devices are connected, you can take advantage of your phone’s Internet connection to watch YouTube videos, Netflix movies, your WhatsApp video calls, your Facebook photos, among other possibilities on your TV screen.
What to do if your mobile does not support MHL / HDMI
As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, currently, the best option to connect a smartphone with a normal TV (not Smart) is to use a streaming device.
