With the exception of the digital channel tuner and built-in speakers, modern computer monitors share common hardware characteristics with televisions. For this reason, it is not at all unusual that in the event of an eventuality with our main TV or simply by having a PC screen available at home we can use it as a television, even as a Smart TV.
For this to happen, we just have to make sure that the monitor has the right size (24 inches or more) and an HDMI port that accepts the connection with a digital television decoder or Android TV box. But since only the video signal can travel through the HDMI cable, we must make sure that these devices have an additional audio and video output, which will allow it to be connected to a sound equipment that accepts 3.5mm or RCA cable connections.
Fortunately, there are a multitude of devices with these characteristics on the market. Here is a brief summary.
Turn a monitor computer into a TV
Most digital terrestrial television tuners and subscription television decoders have HDMI connections and additional audio outputs, in some cases optical audio outputs. Simply connect the decoder to the monitor through its HDMI input and output its audio signal to an external sound system with the corresponding cable.
Turn a monitor computer into a Smart TV
Many manufacturers of Android TV boxes certified by Google, such as Xiaomi Mi Box, and generic Android TV boxes include an HDMI output and another 3.5 mm audio output to be connected to audio and video receivers.
This case is similar to the previous one, with the difference that not all the signal emitted by the AV output through the yellow, red and white cables will be used. Instead we will only use the red and white stereo audio cables, which will be connected to compatible sound systems.
What to do if your monitor only has a VGA port?
In this case, what you have to do is get an HDMI to VGA adapter that transmits the video signal through a VGA output and the audio through a port compatible with a 3.5 mm jack cable.
