How to take RAW photos on your iPhone

Shortly after the launch of the iPhone 12 Pro, the Apple ProRaw format also entered the world of digital photography.

What is the Apple ProRaw format?

The Apple ProRaw format is an adaptation of the RAW format promoted by Apple and that all owners of high-end digital cameras know very well, since it is a lossless format that allows them to make advanced editions, often from the same device.

The images captured in Apple ProRaw format from the professional versions of iPhone 12 Pro onwards preserve a very high percentage of the information collected by the camera sensor, so they are close to reality. All this information can be professionally edited on a computer through programs like Photoshop or Lightroom, or on the same smartphone.

However, it is not enough that the ProRaw format has been incorporated natively into the iPhone camera, since by default it continues to save them in JPEG. To change this situation, you need to do a simple activation from the iPhone configuration options. Follow these steps.

How to enable Apple ProRaw on supported iPhone models

Go to Settings > Camera. Then tap Formats and scroll down to the Photo Capture section. Next, slide the switch for Apple’s ProRaw option to the right.

From now on, when you open the camera on your iPhone you will find the RAW icon that will allow you to take Apple ProRaw shots.

Which iPhone models are compatible with Apple ProRaw?

The models compatible with Apple ProRaw are the following: iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
