What is an Operating System (OS)?

The operating system is the most important program of a hardware-software set. Electronic products manufactured for end users such as computers and smartphones belong to this category.

At the hardware level, its job is to establish communication between the information input and output devices connected to the equipment that hosts them, and make them cooperate with each other to optimize the response time of any operation requested by a possible user.

As for the software section, the operating system provides the user interface to control its functions and grants the permissions that are relevant to execute a specific task.

Likewise, it offers an appropriate environment to execute other software applications, also known as programs, and it is obliged to have a file system to be able to manage the information generated by the different processes.

Examples of operating systems

In the current technological market there are a variety of operating systems, both for fixed and mobile computer equipment.

The most important are undoubtedly the Windows, Mac and Linux systems that operate on computers; iOS and Android systems designed for mobile terminals; and the Android TV, Vidaa, WebOS and Tizen operating systems developed for smart TVs.
