What is Fast Startup in Windows 10 and Windows 11?

Fast Startup (or Fast Startup) is a feature of Windows 10 and Windows 11 that, as its name suggests, allows the system to boot quickly. When Fast Startup is enabled, Windows does not shut down completely upon user request. Instead, it suspends and saves the current state to a hibernation file. When powered on, it will use the information in this file to quickly return to that state, speeding up the boot process.

Fast Startup is a default feature of Windows 10 and Windows 11 designed to benefit users who want to quickly resume their tasks and programs after turning on the system. But sometimes it can lead to errors, for example, failures when loading the hibernation file, unstable behavior related to the lack of updating programs or the system itself that requires a complete shutdown.

It can also happen that this hibernation file is very large and produces errors due to lack of space, especially on SSD drives with low storage capacity. Therefore, it may be advisable to disable it while the problems are resolved.

How to disable Fast Startup in Windows 10 and Windows 11?

Click the Start menu. In the box that says Search apps, settings, and documents, type “control panel.” When the Control Panel app appears, click Open.

Click System and Security. Under Power Options, click Change power button actions.

In the Set power buttons and enable password protection window, click Change currently unavailable settings.

Now go to Shutdown Settings and uncheck the Enable Fast Startup (Recommended) box. To finish, click Save Changes.

When you want to revert this setting, follow the same steps until you reach the Quick Startup option (recommended). Activate this option with a check. Then, click Save Changes.
