There are three types of Windows 10 licenses, but the ones that interest home users are OEM and Retail licenses. The first is associated with a new desktop or laptop computer that comes with Windows pre-installed, that is, those purchased at department stores or specialty retail stores. This type of license is limited to a single computer, therefore, it does not give the right to use them on another PC.
On the other hand, a Retail license is a type of software license linked to the purchase of Windows as a computer program. It is usually purchased from the Microsoft Store and many online stores such as Amazon.
Unlike OEM licenses, Retail licenses are not limited to a single computer and can even be sold by their owner. This also means that it can be activated on a different computer as long as it is running the same version of Windows.
The way to transfer a Windows 10 Retail license to another PC is very simple, you just have to keep in mind that once activated on the second computer, it will no longer be active on the original computer. To do so, follow these instructions.
On the source system, click Start and select Settings > Accounts. Next, click on Your information. Then sign in with your Microsoft account. Once this is done, the Windows 10 license will automatically be linked to your Microsoft account.
How to pass the Windows 10 license to the other computer
The following steps are performed from the second computer.
Click Start and select Settings > Accounts. Next, click on Your information. Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the Windows 10 license.
Go to the Microsoft accounts page https://account.microsoft.com/account/ and sign in.
Click the Devices tab and navigate to the computer you want to deactivate the license for. Click View details. Then click Remove device (Unlink from your account).
To finish, go back to the source computer and sign out of your Microsoft account. After a few minutes, the Windows 10 license will be activated on the new system.
